Keith Haring painting Grace Jones, 1986 — Limited Edition Print

In preparation for shooting Vamp, the 1986 cult film in which she played Katrina, Queen of Vampires, Grace Jones's body and face were painted by the American pop artist Keith Haring. Jones sported Haring's instinctive primary lines on her skin, making her resemble a tribal queen in ritual dress, white patterns marking the flow of energy in her body. Photographer Douglas Kirkland, famed for his on-set portraits, captured the pair mid-creation.

C-Type Print

A digital c-type is a photographic print, on light-sensitive paper, that has been exposed using digital technology, rather than traditional analogue (otherwise known as ‘darkroom’) techniques.

Digital c-types are created by exposing the paper using lasers or LEDs rather than a bulb, like in a darkroom. The second part of the traditional process is much the same however: the paper is processed in a photographic developer, followed by bleach fix before being washed to remove the processing chemicals.

The two artists met two years prior, in 1984, at Robert Mapplethorpe’s studio, where the pair were introduced by Andy Warhol. Warhol would later that year bring the two together for a photoshoot for his magazine, Interview. Haring painted Jones’s body multiple times in the mid-1980s, most notably for the music video for her single ‘I’m Not Perfect (But I’m Perfect for You)’ and for a now infamous performance at the Paradise Garage. ’
