The Smiths and Beyond contains photographer Kevin Cummin's vast collection of works from following the English rock band's rise to fame in the British independent music scene.  Cummins had been photographing bands from the late 70s onwards, so when The Smiths emerged from Manchester in 1983, he began to record their progress. David Bowie is photographed performing at the Rollarena in Leeds during the Ziggy Stardust / Aladdin Sane tour on June 29, 1973. This was one of the first David Bowie gigs Cummins went to, and one of the first he photographed. This photograph is now in the permanent collection of the VA Museum and one of the photographers most collected.

David Bowie is captured head-on during an intimate portrait session on November 8, 1995. The image highlights one of Bowie's defining features, his anisocoria, or different-sized pupils. This quirky characteristic was a result of a teenage fistfight that left the musician with his famous blue and black eyes. 

British singer Freddie Mercury of rock band Queen is photographed on stage at the Manchester Apollo in England on November 27, 1979. Known for using clothing as commentary, Mercury's all-leather cop look nods to the Motor Sport Clubs of the 70s that masked much London's queer subculture.

Oasis's bandmembers (L-R: Paul McGuigan, Noel Gallagher, Liam Gallagher, Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs and Tony McCarroll) are photographed in a London alleyway on March 15, 1994. The English rock band is known for its influence on the "Britpop" era of the 1990s and is among the most successful acts to come out of the UK.

Lead singer Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) and bassist Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols are photographed performing on stage at Ivanhoe’s in Huddersfield, England on Christmas Day in 1977. This would be the final UK performance of the band as they broke up a few weeks after the show.

Ian Curtis is photographed performing with his band Joy Division at the Futurama One Festival at the Queen’s Hall in Leeds on September 8, 1979. The event was billed as "The World’s First Science Fiction Music FestivalT and featured a two-stage floorplan that allowed for seamless band rotation.

Curtis was known for his bass-baritone voice, dance style, and songwriting typically filled with imagery of desolation and emptiness, characteristic of the new post-punk genre. 

American singer Iggy Pop is photographed performing on tour to support his new album Lust for Life at the Manchester Apollo on September 25, 1977. Designated the "Godfather of Punk", Pop has remained a cultural icon and had a significant influence on a wide range of musicians in numerous genres. 

David Bowie stands in front of legendary British-themed restaurant Tea Sympathy in New York City in 1997. The photo was taken a during the singer's 50th birthday and concert at Madison Square Garden and was part of a session for an NME magazine cover. 

Jamaican singer-songwriter Bob Marley is photographed performing at Bingley Hall in Stafford, England on June 22, 1978. Marley is considered one of the pioneers of reggae and his contributions to music increased the visibility of Jamaican music worldwide.

Sex Pistols: The End is Near 25.12.77 follows Kevin Cummins, the preeminent photographer of British bands over the last four decades, as he captures the final UK gig of the infamous Sex Pistols on Christmas Day, 1977.  The punk band, at the center of a tabloid frenzy and banned from just about every venue in the country, had booked themselves into a small club in Huddersfield to perform a benefit in support of striking West Yorkshire firefighters.  Every frame Kevin shot is here, for the first time, in this book of more than 150 color and black and white photographs, each beautifully capturing Johnny Rotten, Sid Vicious, Steve Jones, and Paul Cook as they play together for the last time in their home country. Just weeks later The Pistols would break up and a year later, Sid would be dead.

Joy Division's members Ian Curtis, Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris are photographed in Hulme, Manchester on January 6, 1979. The group was one of the pioneers of the post-punk movement and influenced major bands like the Cure and U2.

American singer-songwriter Debbie Harry is photographed performing with Blondie in support of the band Television at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester on May 26, 1977.  Both bands, though different in their musical styles, emerged from the CBGB club in New York.

Guitarist Graham Coxon (left) and singer Damon Albarn, of English pop group Blur, are photographed at Piccadilly Circus Underground station in February of 1994. The alternative rock group was one of the most popular bands in the U.K. during the Britpop movement and helped popularize the genre through their albums and chart battle with rival band Oasis.

Courtney Love, lead vocalist of American alternative rock group Hole, is photographed retouching her makeup while in Zurich, Switzerland in 1996. Love was a popular figure of the 90s grunge scene and is also known for her relationship with Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, with whom she shares a daughter, Frances Bean. 

David Bowie is captured in silhouette while rehearsing in the studio for the It's My Life Tour with his band Tin Machine in Dublin on August 4, 1991. In contrast to Bowie's previous tours, this would see the group book smaller, more intimate venues to focus on the new music they had come out with.
