David Bowie with barking dog, 1974 — Limited Edition Print - Terry O'Neill

Terry O'Neill

David Bowie for Diamond Dogs II, 1974 — Limited Edition Print

From £4,200

After taking the reference shots that would be used by the artist Guy Peallaert to create the cover for David Bowie’s 1974 album ‘Diamond Dogs,’ Terry O’Neill was asked to take images to be used for publicity and marketing.

This was his account of the shoot:

On the day, David walked in with a few assistants and a giant dog. When he emerged from the back, now clothed in high-heeled boots and a sombrero Cordobés, he looked terrific. The dog was going to be placed at his feet. So far, so good. Bowie stretched out in his chair and I went to work, but at every snap of my camera the dog grew more and more agitated. The clicking camera and popping lights must have set him off. At one point, the strobe that was hovering above us encouraged the now barking dog to leap. People ran for cover! I was behind the camera.  David didn’t even flinch.  That image, often referred to as Jumping Dog, has been called one of the most iconic images in rock and roll!
