Pure 35mm Photojournalism on the Streets of Soho
When you look at entertainment pictures many are digitally edited or made with elaborate studio setups. Yet photographs taken on film still hold a place in photographic history.
After photographing The Beatles at Abbey Road Studios, Terry O'Neill was approached by Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham to photograph the band. Of creating a conventional studio portrait Terry O'Neill took the group to Denmark Street in Soho a place famous for music shops and songwriters. Terry O'Neill photographed the five members with their instruments and cases making a street‑level portrait that showed their emerging identity.
The photograph shows Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richards Charlie Watts and Bill Wyman during the years of the band. The setting and informal style helped set the picture from more conventional promotional portraits of pop groups at that time.
It is worth distinguishing the photograph from the print itself. A photograph taken on film in 1963 can be reproduced as a fine‑art print years later. Terry O'Neills limited‑edition Rolling Stones prints are offered as fine‑art editions with details such, as the edition number and certificate of authenticity helping collectors identify the specific print.
