I wanted the photo to have a timeless jazz club feel; I thought it’d suit them and their zoot suit look. It was too difficult to shoot it in the studio; too sterile. Because I shot a lot for Factory Records, I asked if I could use the Hacienda to shoot it in. The stage was a great low-ceilinged black box. It was great. We had plenty of room to work in and their lighting tech helped me light and give it a smoky atmosphere. Then I got the band to play a little and kept one guy in a dance pose and shot it at around 1/15th of a second - on a Hasselblad on tripod - to get some movement and blur in it.
