Milton H. Greene

For over four decades, Milton H. Greene (1922-1985) made his mark as one of the most celebrated photographers in the world. Greene created a vast body of work, comprising images of our most beloved artists, musicians, and theatrical celebrities. His photography traced the passage of an era, highlighting the best in Hollywood and fashion. Greene was one of the earliest and best-known artists working in the early days of colour photography. He worked with a plethora of celebrities, from Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Audrey Hepburn, to Grace Kelly, Marlene Dietrich, Dizzy Gillespie and Judy Garland. His work was showcased in the biggest publications of the time, including Vogue, Life, Look, Town & Country and Harper’s Bazaar.

Greene is perhaps best known for his unique personal friendship and business partnership with Marilyn Monroe. They met on a photo shoot for Look magazine in 1953 and developed an instant rapport, quickly becoming close friends. In 1954, after helping her get out of her studio contract with 20th Century Fox, they created Marilyn Monroe Productions. Between the years 1953 to 1957, MMP produced the films ‘Bus Stop’ and ‘Prince and the Showgirl’. The Greene/Monroe collection contains more than 3,000 images, many of them never before seen photographs of the screen legend.
