British singer Freddie Mercury of rock band Queen is photographed on stage at the Manchester Apollo in England on November 27, 1979. Known for using clothing as commentary, Mercury's all-leather cop look nods to the Motor Sport Clubs of the 70s that masked much London's queer subculture.

In preparation for shooting Vamp, the 1986 cult film in which she played Katrina, Queen of Vampires, Grace Jones's body and face were painted by the American pop artist Keith Haring. Jones sported Haring's instinctive primary lines on her skin, making her resemble a tribal queen in ritual dress, white patterns marking the flow of energy in her body. Photographer Douglas Kirkland, famed for his on-set portraits, captured the pair mid-creation.

This quirky characteristic was a result of a teenage fistfight that left the musician with his famous blue and black eyes.

That night, event planner Robert Isabell had four tons of glitter dumped in a four-inch layer on the club's floor which owner Ian Schrager said was like "standing on stardust".
