Billy Boy Rocka, 1985
"In 1985/86 I was commissioned to shoot modern life in Wigan for the inaugural exhibition at the Wigan Pier Heritage Centre. It was a period of change for the town, with the closure of the coal mining industry imminent. While I took many portraits of coal miners, I also aimed to capture a broader view of life in Wigan. My assistant, researching back issues of the local newspapers in the library, came across a small story about a man named Billy Boy Rocka. HeÕd got the runner-up prize in a nationwide Elvis lookalike competition. I went to meet him Ð he was extremely proud of his achievement Ð and spent the day photographing him in his flat. This particular shot was taken in his sitting room." - Kevin Cummins
